History
In
1990 the Salesians took up the running of a new parish in Nashik as
the erstwhile Don Bosco Mass Centre was constituted into a separate
parish and bifurcated from Holy Cross Parish. Initially the parish
was run from the Salesian Training Institute (STI) with the
novitiate chapel being used for liturgical services. With the
passage of time the need was felt to set up a separate parish
community with a hall that would be used exclusively for parish
activities and a church for daily mass and other liturgical
functions. In the course of time another project came up viz. the
popular demand to set up a Don Bosco School on the vacant plot of
land opposite STI. Finally, another house became necessary to house
the college-going brothers with the study centre for students of
theology being moved to DBYC Pune. The solution was found in having
a three-in-one community. And in 1996 the construction was begun.
From June 1997 the confreres moved into the new parish building
which temporarily also housed the school. Three brothers doing their
college studies also joined the community along with the principal
and the parish priest. From 1998 the school building adjacent to the
community residence became operational. The Don Bosco Bhavan
community was canonically erected in June 1999, with Fr. Albano
Fernandes as the first rector.
Present Activities
The Don Bosco, Nashik, community has the unique distinction of being
a three-in-one community, incorporating (a) a formation set-up for
college-going brothers, (b) a parish, and (c) a school with students
from kindergarten to Std. X.
Don Bosco Community
Don Bosco Bhavan, Nashik, is a house of formation of the Salesians
of Don Bosco, Mumbai Province. The young Salesians who are in the
community do their college studies in one of the neighbouring
colleges. Besides attending to their studies, the young Salesians
are also involved in the pastoral activities of the school and
parish.
The Don Bosco Parish
The Don Bosco Parish (started in 1990) today has a strength of 325
families: 175 in the Satpur sector, and 150 in the Don Bosco sector.
Masses are said every Sunday both in Don Bosco Parish hall as well
as the Dominic Savio Mass Centre – Satpur. The Don Bosco sector of
the parish is divided into three BCC zones, while the Satpur sector
is made up of eight BCC zones. There are also two youth groups in
the parish, one at Satpur and the other at Don Bosco.
The Don Bosco School
The Don Bosco School presently has a total strength of 1235 students
ranging from the Jr. K.G. to Std. X. The school has maintained high
academic standards. In March 2008, all but one of the 90 students
that were sent up for their SSC exams passed: 40 with distinction,
37 with a first class and 12 with a second class. Furthermore, in
keeping with the best of Salesian traditions, the school has had
plenty of extra-curricular activities that have met with an
enthusiastic response from the students.
